So when nosotros hear the title "The Reichenbach Autumn", I guess we all think of this very shocking moment:

However, the Reichenbach Fall, give-and-take by give-and-take, means the Richard Brook Fall. And who is Richard Brook?

In conclusion, the title is "The Moriarty Fall". (I personally don't believe the twins theory). Merely does this hateful Moriarty's (besides simulated) suicide? I don't think and so, exactly because his suicide was fake (personally I hope believe there are many ways to tell it was false, starting from TRF itself and throughout the whole Series 3, not merely HLV). So what was his autumn?

Considering I owe you a autumn, Sherlock. I… owe… you.

If he said "You owe me a fall", then that would advise "Sherlock should fall in render after Jim's fall". But Jim says "I owe you lot a fall, Sherlock", which can hateful merely two things:

  1. That Jim must fall in return, after Sherlock supposedly already has, which makes absolutely no sense, moreover since Jim said that Sherlock shouldn't be scared of the fall that'southward coming.
  2. That Jim will force Sherlock to fall as a revenge, because Jim has already fallen.

Just why revenge, really? What has Sherlock ever done to Moriarty, on a personal level? Apart from a few small wins over some of Moriarty's clients (well-nigh whom Moriarty doesn't give a damn), Sherlock never managed any sort of victory over Moriarty himself.  On the reverse, actually, Moriarty claimed that afterwards the court Sherlock had unintentionally helped him to become "Mr Sex" for criminals all around the world. And so why would he experience vengeful?

Allow's leave this matter for later and let'due south examine the word "fall" instead.

Moriarty never meant a literal fall from a alpine building, simply because Sherlock was the one who chose where they would meet! Shit, Moriarty didn't fifty-fifty plan for a meeting! He merely accustomed one time again Sherlock'southward invitation. (TGG once again, the blueprint is pretty constant) The simply reason Jim spoke and so descriptively of an actual autumn was because the writers wanted to confuse US, the audition. The nearly curious thing here is why an unarmed Sherlock chose to meet Jim Moriarty in such a dangerous place as a rooftop. Considering he wanted to simulated his suicide? I don't think so, just I will expain my viewpoint in another post for the sake of this text's length.

Then, so far we 've got vengeance and a figurative fall. Let's move on. IOU. IOU has a double meaning, "I owe you", the revenge affair, and probably too a secret one, the three letters thing, which Sherlock has to decipher.

Nosotros never found out what this code meant exactly. Only rejoice, because We Volition. Why? Because Sherlock actually deciphered it. And while he did, he never brought it up again in TRF or in Series iii. (Here's a proof that Moriarty didn't dice and wasn't meant to- the fact that so many things regarding him and Sherlock remain unexplained!)

  • Sherlock when Jim left the IOU message for the commencement fourth dimension:
image

#I dearest information technology when he is so mysterious # I hateful, of course I hate him, but he is and then sexy sometimes

  • Deciphering the IOU code becomes Sherlock's obsession but he doesn't share it with anybody:

SHERLOCK: I…O…U… Glycerol molecule… What are you?

MOLLY: What did you mean I.O.U?

John enters the laboratory.(Look at Sherlock.)

image

M: You said I.O.U. Y'all were muttering it while you were working.

Southward: Zippo. Mental note.

So, Sherlock wasn't willing to share the details nigh IOU, just he didn't mind muttering it in front of Molly. He became secretive when John appeared. And he was withal working on it.

  • The second time Sherlock saw the IOU message:
image

Hmmm, I think he starts getting it.

  • Finally, let's retrieve the dialogue the last nighttime earlier Sherlock met Moriarty:

JOHN: What did he bear on?

SHERLOCK: An apple tree. Nothing else.

J: Did he write anything down?

S: No!

No? NO? Are you sure, Sherlock? Because you 've spent the whole episode headaching about IOU, remember???

Conspicuously, either Sherlock knows the exact significant of IOU past the terminate of the episode or suspects information technology. But what is certain is that he 'south unwilling to let John know well-nigh information technology. If Sherlock had no idea what IOU was nigh, he would say information technology to John, hoping that the "conductor of light" might give him an thought. Therefore, IOU has no technical significance as a inkling for some case or something like. I can make two assumptions: either information technology is almost something veeeery personal between Sherlock and Moriarty (most likely truthful, the terminal trouble) or it has to practice with Sherlock's nighttime past. Or both.

Concluding but not least: I retrieve Steve Thompson in one case said that the objects on which IOU was written were completely random. Maybe, only I am not absolutely sure this is the example. Perhaps Moriarty the storyteller hither narrates the ultimate story: the Bible.  (*I don't link these things with the Grimm tales, mostly because I read some tales which were featuring them and I didn't find any particular connection, only then once more, I wouldn't claim I am an good at Brothers Grimm, and then who knows…)

Apple, the forbidden fruit. The temptation.

image

Windows. That's the hardest function, but could it mean the "Windows of Sky"?

image

Gray wings… could it be a (Fallen) Angel? Thompson or Arwel or someone anyhow (sad, memory was always bad) said that information technology was magpie feathers only magpie feathers look like that:

image

Possibly I am overthinking it merely these wings expect like a fallen affections's.

  • And then, the apple is clearly linked to Moriarty. The forbidden fruit. The temptation. Moriarty ate from it. Moriarty has already fallen.   Moriarty - I - is the devil. The temptation.
  • The angel is near likely a metaphor for Sherlock (although it could also be for John). After all, Moriarty says "Sherlock is on the side of the angels".  But I'thousand not certain the graffiti depicts an bodily angel - it'southward more than like a fallen 1.  So Sherlock - U - the angel that volition fall (and become a demon).
  • And and so this bloody O and the windows… I have NO Idea what this might mean. If it is a verb (besides owe) I will never find out. Unless it really does stand up for Honey, which is the most reasonable of all. Or KNOW, this could mayhap work, if Moriarty knows most Sherlock'south childhood. Later watching The Abominable Helpmate I started believing that at that place is a great possibility IOU means I OR YOU. Then, the devil or the affections. This O could have something to practise with Sherlock's past, the 3rd brother, no thought, no idea.  Ane extremely far-fetched thought that I had though is that perhaps O stands for John. And John stands for Sherlock's windows of heaven. Sherlock's been watching through the windows, but Moriarty will make him fall earlier he enters heaven. (come up on don't have this in a muddied way!!! :P) It is extremely far-fetched as there is no evidence O stands for John or anything else I mentioned, but these are all my disappointing ideas.

In all seriousness, perhaps it links to that dark thing that happened in Sherlock's past. Maybe this is what fabricated Jim believe that "they were meant for each other".

Anyhow:

Jim volition revenge Sherlock by making him autumn, considering Sherlock has already made him fall. The just significant of the word that tin explain how the fuck Sherlock made Jim autumn is in the expression "Fall IN Love" (unless their childhoods are somehow linked, I have an idea near that BUT I Promise IT IS NOT TRUE). Later all, the apple in Genesis is a metaphor for erotic love and lust. Apparently, Jim, as a psychopath, tin can't stand up being in dearest, let lone beingness rejected by his love. What Jim plans to do is to force Sherlock through everything he'southward been. He will seperate him from John, in a way that volition make John feel betrayed eventually and deny him. He volition non just break Sherlock's heart - he will Fire information technology. But Sherlock's ultimate fall will exist that he volition cede himself physically and morally for the sake of this love he can't have -  fallen angel. Simply remember none of these happen in TRF - all of them have happened past the end of HLV.

Physically:

image

This is Sherlock's actual fall. For this scene they used the Reichenbach theme, "Prepared to do anything".

And morally:

image

There's nothing homo left in his face up actually. And wishing Merry Christmas to someone you kill… that's frightening. Not that Magnussen didn't deserve it, but Sherlock is notwithstanding a murderer. "Beloved is a much more vicious motivator."

That was Sherlock's fall. He became a criminal and he became a criminal for the love that burned his heart. NOW they are shut to exist the aforementioned (I AM YOU, YOU ARE ME, criminals, destroyed by dear), now it'south time for Moriarty to render, to either pull him to his side (the side of demons) or kill him once and for all (and probably die along). Which leads me to a train of idea that I volition explain in future posts.
